19 October

Day 1   Monday 19th October   SYDNEY-SAIGON (HCMC)

Depart :                    Sydney
Arrive:             SAIGON (HCMC)

Upon arrival in Saigon the Group will be met at the airport and transferred to the hotel for check-in.

Day 2 Tuesday 20th October             SAIGON-          B, D

Breakfast at the hotel.

Welcome Dinner  

Commence with a morning city sights tour, down Dong Khoi St, past the Opera House, the Central Post Office, Notre Dam Cathedral, and visit the War Remnants Museum and Presidential Palace.
 Visit Binh Tan markets pm free for shopping

Day 3 Wednesday 21st October         HCMC - VUNG TAU-- BHCMC - VUNG TAU-BA RIA  (B).

SAIGON [B]
Breakfast at the hotel.

 

Evening Free

Join transfer vehicle to the Hydrofoil wharf. Hydrofoil to Vung Tau arriving approx 10.30 am. Upon arrival in Vung Tau the Group will be met at the dock and transferred to the Grand Hotel for check-in.
This afternoon travel up to Radar Hill, then on to Bai Sau (Back Beach) the longest of the peninsula’s beaches, spend time walking along the beachside area adjacent to the former Australia wartime base (1ALSG), The Australian Logistic Support
Group.   Drive past the impressive VC memorial. Other sites of interest visited are, the site of the former, Peter Badcoe” club, the Chopper Pad and the former American recreational “Beach Comber Bar”.

 Day 4 Thursday 22nd October          Vung Tau-  Nui Dat – Long Tan -_ Vung Tau (B,L)                     

VUNG TAU – NUI DAT – LONG TAN – VUNG TAU [B, L]
Breakfast at the hotel.

 

 

Evening free

This morning we travel by coach, passing the former US/Australian wartime airbase and continue to Cat Lo Port to board a local fishing boat.  Cruise the delta waterways to the outskirts of Baria, disembark the boat and walk to a local memorial before re- joining our coach to travel to the Provincial capital Baria. (Shop for some presents for the Baria Orphanage children) 
Next a visit the Baria Orphanage (built in 1994 by the AVVRG), Followed by a visit to a former wartime tunnel complex. At Long Phouc (Picnic Lunch provided) Then continue by coach to the former Australian Task Force Base (ATF) at Nui Dat.
 We visit the Nui Dat Kindy (Stage 1 built by the AVVRG in 2004 Stage 2 of the project awaiting approval and construction to begin 2009) and former military landmarks such as, SAS hill,” Luscombe Field “ air strip, Luscombe Bowl and the “Kangaroo South Pad” a Helicopter dust off strip and the Pearly Gates. We then pause for a briefing by our Group Leader Dave Sabben   in preparation for our trek to the Long Tan battle site. We move forward through the rubber plantation and exit the former task force perimeter following in part the patrol route, passing by small villages and local hamlets and across the dam wall of the Suoi Da Bang River and catchment area, before arriving at The Long Tan Memorial Cross. At The Long Tan Memorial, trekkers may pay their own personal tribute and reflect on the significance of Long Tan and the Vietnam War. Return to Vung Tau

 Day 5  Friday 23rd October  Vung Tau - LONG HAI- Minh Dam -Vung Tau  (B,L)

VUNG TAU - LONG HAI- MINH DAM – VUNG TAU  
Breakfast at the hotel.
This evening Farewell Dinner at local restaurant

We travel by coach to the Horse Shoe (Former Fire support Base, the elevated site of an extinct volcano then to the village of Dat Do, in a town well known for its traditional fine rice vermicelli production.  We continue to the coastal areas adjoining the Long Hai Mountains, We and walk up to the Minh Damh Secret Zone (a former wartime Viet Cong H Q strong hold, now commemorated by a Vietnamese Memorial Pagoda to their war dead), trek the rugged mountainside path through former hospital sites, living areas and hideouts used by the Viet Cong forces.  Picnic Lunch  (Provided) we then trek up to the MIA Helicopter crash site of Lance Corporal John Gillespie.  (A memorial is to erected on the site) Re joins our coach. Returning to Vung Tau via the seaside resort of” Soldiers Retreat “ a former Viet Cong  (VC) Rest & Recreation   (R&R) area.

Day 6    Saturday 24th October    Vung Tau   HCMC  (B)

Day 7  Wednesday 28th October    Am Arrive   SYDNEY  09.15AM

After lunch depart Vung Tau by coach and travel to HCMC. Visit to Ben Hoa Museum to see the original Long Tan Cross, transfer to the airport to join the overnight return flight to Sydney.
